Addiction Recovery Methods
By admin | December 20, 2007
Addiction recovery can take place in many ways. There are “traditional” methods; there are those methods that may be…shall we say “different”.
“Holistic” methods are suggested as one means of treatment. “Holistic” means to deal with the whole aspect of something, rather than just parts of it. In other words, deal with not only the physical part of recovery, but the mental and emotional areas, too.
Some examples of holistic methods are acupuncture, either using needles (ouch!) placed on certain areas of the body or not using needles. Needleless acupuncture involves applying pressure to “median energy points” in order to get the desired results. Sorry, but that sounds a little “out there”.
A very interesting method of holistic treatment, however, was the area of animal/pet therapy; specifically, equine therapy. In this situation, the animal used is a horse. Usually, one thinks of dogs or cats as being “therapy animals”, but it is thought that because of the fact that activities involving horses almost always happen outside, one benefits more from this type of therapy. The “communing with nature” idea coming into play, perhaps?
Now, this one is REALLY different. “Coloring” therapy. Yeah, that’s right. The idea behind this one is that coloring does not require thinking; therefore, when using coloring as therapy, one is supposed to concentrate ONLY on coloring, and not actually be THINKING about anything.
It is suggested that holistic methods be used ALONG with conventional addiction recovery methods, not IN PLACE of. That makes sense. Hey, anything that will help a person become drug-free, as long as it’s physically safe and won’t mess up a person’s head any worse, might be worth a try.
