Substance abuse treatment

By admin | December 20, 2007

Treatment centers for drug or alcohol addiction may not treat ALL addictions. One center may deal with drug AND alcohol rehabilitation; another may deal strictly with substance abuse treatment. Most of the time, “substance abuse” refers to the use of what is commonly referred to as the “hard” drugs: cocaine, heroin, meth, and the “big stuff”. Because the addiction to these drugs and drugs like them, the methods of treatment are going to be different.

These drugs will make a person forget or not care about EVERYTHING- the job, the family, the last time a decent meal was eaten, the last time a bath was taken. Because of this, physical problems usually go hand in hand with substance abuse. Substance abuse treatment methods, then, may actually have to take place in two or more different phases. If a person is too physically sick to literally sit up, he or she is just not going to benefit from any individual or group therapy or anything else until that problem has been taken care of. If that’s the case, the treatment may take longer, and it may take a while to even know it’s working.

The person who is not in that bad of shape physically, though, may be able, and willing, to jump in with both feet right from the start. He or she will be able to take advantage of all that the treatment program has to offer. The duration of the treatment, then, will be a lot shorter, and it will be apparent almost from the beginning that things are going along fine.
