How many types of addiction are there? You might as well ask the old question, “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” Both these questions can be endlessly argued among addiction therapists and theologians, and no one will come up with the “right” answer because there is none!

Addiction therapists often differ in their view of what constitutes a true addiction, and what can be classified as simply “people behaving badly.” For example, addiction purists regard the only true addictions as those involving substances like alcohol, cocaine, opiates, meth, and all the other drugs of abuse that cause both physical and psychological dependence (addiction). These therapists diagnose addicted patients straight from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, Version Four, Text Revision (the DSM-IV-TR). They do not acknowledge any type of addiction except substance dependence.

On the other side are the addiction therapists who believe that there are certain behavioral addictions such as food addiction, sex addiction, theft addiction, pornography addiction and gambling addiction. Purists see these as “people behaving badly” who should not be excused from the consequences of their actions by saying, “I can’t help it. I’m addicted to this behavior.”

The truth is that research shows that substance addition and behavioral addictions most often go hand-in-hand. For example, a pathological gambler almost always sits at the poker table or at the race track with a big glass of alcohol in his hand that keeps getting refilled. A woman who shoplifts impulsively usually smokes cigarettes to calm her anxiety about getting caught.

Let’s take a look at some established characteristics of addiction:

Frequent attempts to “cut down” or stop that always fail

Intense anxiety when waiting to engage in addictive behavior/drug use

Social, occupation and legal consequences

Advice from others to stop

Needing to “feed” the addiction more than anything else

Denial that there is a problem with behavior/drug use

Depending upon your viewpoint, these characteristics could apply to either substance addiction or behavioral addiction, or both. So what should you do if you are ready to admit that you have what might be called a behavioral addiction? It’s essential that you find an addiction rehabilitation program with counselors who believe that certain behaviors are addictive. In this type of program, you will learn how to develop self-control over your problem behavior, resist urges, and prevent relapses.

If you think you have a problem with either your use of substances or troublesome behavior that you can’t control, open the Yellow Pages and start looking under “addiction counseling” or “mental health.” Then pick up the phone and start calling. Don’t stop until you find a therapist who can help you reach your goal of abstinence.

October 21-27 was Red Ribbon Week (at least it was in some states). During this time, a LOT of attention was paid to drug abuse, with emphasis on NEVER BEGINNING to take drugs. This year, it focused on prescription drug abuse. More about that in a later blog.

Anyway, besides giving info on that particular form of abuse, it did provide addiction treatment resources for people who are or think they are or think they may be or think they know someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol. One of the resources was addiction counselors.

It would seem that addiction counselors would only be employed in those facilities that offer addiction treatment. That ain’t necessarily so (pardon the grammar). Some counselors can be considered “personal addiction counselors”.

In other words, a particular addiction counselor may not be affiliated or considered on staff at any one specific facility. Oh, he or she probably has “practice privileges” at a facility, in case a patient needs more help than the counselor might can provide at the moment, but the counselor is considered “private” or “independent”.

Sounds like a pretty good idea. Well, think about it. If a counselor wants to approach addiction treatment from a faith-based (or Christian, if one prefers) standpoint, then he or she can do that, and can make sure that anyone who is seeking that particular type of counseling knows of the practice.

Another counselor may wish to limit his or her practice to adolescents, but not be affiliated with a facility designed for this age group. A few strategically placed business cards in a pediatrician’s office, or family practice office, might just point a teenager who knows he or she needs help in the right direction.

Hey, again, if it works to get a person “clean and sober”, then good! That’s what important!

The words “drug addiction” still have the capacity to bring to one’s mind the homeless “wino” hanging around outside the liquor store and the rescue mission, or the pitiful character lying on a filthy bed in some “flop house” with a tourniquet around his arm and a needle in the vein.

These mental images still ring true; however, more and more today there are people who have a drug addiction and yet look no more different than anyone else, or act in any way that would cause someone to know that the problem is there just by looking at the person.

Drug addiction takes on many different forms today. There are people who are addicted to prescription drugs, narcotic pain medication, sleep aids, or even some over-the-counter drugs or treatment methods (such as nasal spray, cough suppressants, etc.)

The addicted person may have such control (or think so, rather) that it is indeed unnoticeable to the average person that a problem exists. Unless something happens to cause the person’s problem to be brought to light, it may very well be that a person who shares office space with another may never know that that person is struggling with drug addiction.

When (notice I do not say if but WHEN) it is finally exposed, one may find oneself asking,”Why couldn’t I tell? If I had just known, I would have tried to help.” However, no matter how much anyone wanted to or wants to help, the person with the problem must first admit that there is a problem.

Until that happens, no one can do anything. Once the problem is brought out into the open, however, many opportunities exist for one to offer all the support and compassion possible to help the person overcome the problem of drug addiction.

Thank God there are actually many forms of addiction treatment available today. Unless one truly feels that the only way to completely and totally break a drug addiction is by going “cold turkey”, a person no longer has to suffer from withdrawal symptoms as he or she would have in the past.

Addiction treatment can range from individual counseling to group therapy to support groups or programs that involve both the family and close friends. Other options include programs, which use “replacement drug therapy” (carefully controlled and monitored, of course). The most commonly used drug in this treatment method is methadone.

There is even one method of treatment in which the patient is placed under general anesthesia (just as if surgery was to be performed). Medications are then given, while the patient is unconscious that cause the body to go into and through withdrawal much more rapidly than normally.

Each of these programs offers different and unique ways in which the problem is approached and addressed. The person who is seeking help can obtain information on any and all of these programs, and discuss them with whomever he or she wishes, then make the decision as to which one to use.

The mere fact that someone is even looking into these programs is already the most positive step that can be taken in the recovery process. Family members, friends, relatives, anyone who is in close contact with the person who has made this important first move in conquering the problem should immediately begin showing support for and rallying around the person.

On the 28th of April 2000, we attended our son’s graduation ceremony at a The Rehab Advisor refferal program. Our son’s graduation event will forever be etched in our memory, as a rebirth of our child. He looked absolutely wonderful and his behavior was so accepting and calm. For years, we had wondered if we would ever see our “real” son again. We met so many people the evening of our son’s graduation and we cannot remember all of their names, but we want to thank each person who took the time and effort to make a difference in our son’s life. Your efforts are most likely the reason our son developed the will to change, as all other efforts that had been made through the years had not made a difference for him. You are truly the savers of life!
We will never forget your faces or the wonderful things you are doing.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

My son was a bright talented child. He learned to play the guitar and had a natural ability to draw and paint. In his teens something happened to this bright talented child. I found out later that he had gotten into drugs and barely finished high school. He could not hold a job and his only financial support was a family who “gave him money to keep him away”. This went on for twelve years in which time he was a waste to himself and others. After trying numerous “Drug Rehab Programs” I found a program thru The Rehab Advisor. I took him as an emaciated “end of the trail person”. In a short time he regained his health and became himself again. Most importantly he became free of drugs. My son now has a family of his own. He is very productive in working with others to help them gain their own self esteem back and to become free of the ravages of drug use. My son and I have never been closer or had such a good relationship as father and son. The Rehab Advisor not only helped me get my son back to me, but also gave me a very good friend.
There are no words to define what The Rehab Advisor means to my family.

What is cocaine made up of? The drug, which appears to have an extremely complicated chemical makeup, comes from the leaves of the coca plant. The plant is native to South America, and becomes a powerful stimulant, but also one of the most addictive drugs. In the ancient past, natives in South America used this coca for religion and medicine.

The drug cocaine is also known by its chemical name, which is “[1R-(exo,exo)]-3-(Benzoyloxy)-8-methyl-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester”. The drug also has alternative chemical names, and these are [3beta-hydroxy-1alphaH, 5alphaH-tropane-2beta-carboxylic acid methyl ester benzoate and 2beta-carbomethyoxy-3beta-benzoxytropane, ecgonine methyl ester benzoate], as well as [ l-cocaine, beta-cocaine, benzoylmethyl-ecgonine. The chemical formula of cocaine is C17H21NO4. This drug has a molecular weight of 303.36, and has various melting points, depending on the various chemicals in the drug. These are melting points of 98° for the monoclinic tablets, 195° for the Hydrochloride, and 58-63° for the Nitrate dehydrate.

When it was discovered that this natural plant was a stimulant, the natives decided to use it to get rid of fatigue and hunger, or even to boost people’s endurance. At first, the Spanish banned coca because of its effect on the natives. When it was discovered that the natives were actually addicted to the plant, and could not work without it, they started to give the drug to the natives many times a day so that they could do their work.

The effects of cocaine are caused by the interference of information transmission between the nerve cells. The drug is a vasoconstrictor, which means that it narrows the blood vessels. It will also increase the respiration rate and body temperature of those that are using it.

The drug cocaine has physical effects that include increased blood pressure, breathing rates, and heart rates. These symptoms might lead to heart attack, respiratory failure and distress or seizures. There are also affects that are found inside the body. The brain’s wiring is damaged, as are the systems that control the rates of the movements inside the body. The damaging of these important functions is what leads to an overall deterioration of the body.

Recovery from cocaine addiction can be difficult, a drug rehab program can assist in the withdrawal and recovery from cocaine addiction.

There is a drug that has been used for treatments of narcotic withdrawal symptoms and dependences. It is called Methadone, and it is commonly used to treat things such as opium and heroin addictions. Because of the difficulty most people have shaking these addictions on their own, methadone is very helpful for people because it allows them to avoid the symptoms of withdrawal that keep them sick and under control of their drug.

In order for it to work successfully, methadone must be taken once a day. It works to suppress the withdrawal symptoms of the narcotic, and it keeps working for up to a day or perhaps more. It is often used to help opiate addicts get through the detox process because of its symptom-blocking effects. Methadone is monitored by a drug addiction specialist and is often used as part of a drug rehabiltiation program.

Unfortunately, methadone is only effective when someone is addicted to heroin, morphine, or other drugs that are opiates. It is not an effective addiction treatment for other types of drugs. Methadone is able to reduce the cravings that are usually associated with heroin use, and therefore the high of heroin is blocked from the user.

Most often, patients who take methadone remain physically dependant on the methadone, which means they are still addicted to a substance, it is just not as dangerous a substance as the drug they were addicted to. However, they do not experience the highs and lows that usually result from the heroin going through their bodies, and so it replaces the addiction.

There will come a point where someone must manage to get through withdrawal from methadone. This is also going to be hard on someone, but they will not be anywhere near as hard as the original withdrawal from the opiate might have been. Also, a patient in the drug rehab center will do this portion of the treatment under a doctor’s guidance, so the doctor is going to be able to help them with the methadone withdrawal.

Like all drugs, there can be problems with methadone use. Most of the major problems occur when someone uses this drug in ways that it is not intended to be used. When it is used under a physician’s care, there are not going to be any problems that are associated with the use of methadone. However, with the abuse of methadone, there will be serious complications and side effects. Methadone is used by many drug addiction treatment and drug rehab programs to help control withdrawal symptoms.

It also happens that a person does not intend to abuse methadone. If someone believes that since one dose of methadone was so effective, two will be even more so, and they take more doses than the doctor has prescribed to them, they are going to develop a tolerance, and eventually will develop a strong addiction, typically known as prescription drug abuse. This type of addiction is not going to be as easy to shake as the slight addiction that occurs when it is used under a doctor’s care. If a person takes more methadone than they are supposed to, the chemicals in it are going to build up in their bodies and they are going to see the same negative effects that they would be seeing if they were still using their drugs.

Keep in mind that it is also dangerous to stop methadone without the advice of your doctor. Methadone also creates an addiction, so you need to be taken off of this by a doctor, and it is not something you should ever do on your own. In order to correctly stop using methadone, you need to take a look at your life and figure out how it is best to cut down. The doctor will help you gradually cut back on methadone until you are not taking it at all.

Cocaine is second only to marijuana as the most prevalent drug in the United States. It is so addictive that lab studies have shown that animals will choose cocaine over food or water, accept cocaine knowing they will be punished and even press a bar over 10,000 times for a single injection of cocaine. This behavior is no different in humans addicted to cocaine, which explains why treatment is so complex. The first step to recovery from cocaine use is detox. This is a highly unpleasant experience, simply because the body is ridding itself of the drug. Withdrawal symptoms begin during this time and may last a few days to a few weeks, depending on the person.

Cocaine withdrawal symptoms can include: Agitation

Depression

Anxiety

Extreme fatigue

Extreme irritability

Apathy

Nausea and vomiting

Shaking

Muscle pain

Insomnia

As with treatment of any other drug, cocaine will involve many support meetings with other recovering addicts, individual and family counseling sessions, group therapy, fun activities to keep the person busy and distracted. With cocaine, the prolonged use of which has a drastic effect on the mind’s functioning, mentally stimulating activities are ideal. Behavioral changes are really the most effective solution for many drug addictions, including cocaine. That means a change in friends, a change in jobs, learning alternative coping methods and even adopting different social activities. Adopting a healthier lifestyle, avoiding old activities that were previously associated with cocaine use and avoiding old stresses on the job or life in general may be the only way to leave drugs behind for good.

Club Drugs has become a widely used term for a number of illicit drugs and addictive drugs that are most commonly encountered at nightclubs and all-night parties called “raves”.

The main club drugs are MDMA, GHB, Ketamine, Rohyphnol, Methamphetamines, and LSD and are also referred to as: X, Adam, Ecstasy, G, Liquid Ecstasy, Georgia Home Boy, Roofie, Roche, Special K, K, Speed, Ice, Chalk, Meth, and Acid.

Many other drugs are generally available in the club and rave circuit, however these three drugs are more closely associated with clubs because that is where they are most frequently used. Club drugs have also been referred to as “date rape drugs.” They have do not have a taste, odor, or color associated with them. This makes them difficult to detect in drinks or food. Club drugs work on the same parts of the brain that alcohol does, making the use of the drugs in combination with alcohol dangerous. Side effects can include hallucinations, paranoia, amnesia, and even death. The effects vary from individual to individual making it difficult to predict the effect the drugs will have.

Many young teens and adults typically perceive club drugs as fun drugs or as harmless ways to enhance a fun experience. This is not true, club drugs are dangerous – especially when mixed with alcohol or other substances. Club drugs effect memory, sleep, and pain, they are stimulants and hallucinogens, and can cause serious side effects. The effects are sleep, comas, death, low blood pressure, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, upset stomach, delirium, amnesia, depression, breathing difficulties, aggression, violence, psychotic behavior, lack of appetite, and flashbacks.

Club drugs are found most commonly in party and club settings, studies suggest that a majority of the drugs found at these parties are “impure” or altered. This makes them all the more dangerous.

A Club Drug Rehab Program will first treat an addict of club drugs by removing the drugs from their system. It is important to the overall success of a drug rehab program to provide counseling and life skills when the addict is through the withdrawal and has overcome most of the physical cravings of a substance.

Once a detoxification of the body has been completed and the individual is no longer experiencing strong withdrawal symptoms a psychological treatment can be started. Typically this consists of addiction counceling sessions, in either individual or group sesseions. The mental re-wiring of an individual is to re-learn behavior and coping strategies that will assist them in continuing on in a drug-free life after the club drug rehab program.

Can You Prevent Drug Addiction?

Drugs are certainly among some of the hardest things to stop in life. This is due to not only the chemical addictions that develop, but also the psychosocial drug addictions that develop when someone uses drugs on a regular basis.

However, it is important to note that drug addiction can be prevented. Most people think that it is something that is just going to happen, and oftentimes they hope it doesn’t happen to them. However, with a lot of education and a lot of planning ahead, you can prevent drug addiction in several different ways.

First of all, you need to educate people on the negative aspects of drug and alcohol addiction and of drugs themselves. People need to know what drugs do and what drugs do to their bodies. Drug addiction is something that is going to have a bad effect on someone’s body, and if a person knows ahead of time that they are going to be affected in a negative way by drug addiction, they are going to be less likely to try drugs in the first place. Also, if they know what addiction is and how it develops, a person is going to be more likely to only try a certain drug once, instead of using it over and over again and developing a drug addiction. It is lack of education that often leads people into drug addiction.

It is also important that you develop open and honest relationships with the people that you think might be prone to addiction – and that you have open and honest relationships with people to prevent you from developing a drug addiction. When you are held accountable to someone, whether it is a spouse or a friend or a family member, you are going to be less likely to lie to them, and more likely to tell them what is really going on in your life. If you can be honest with someone, they are going to be able to know what you are doing and what kinds of activities you might be involved in. If you are close to someone and you feel that they are experimenting with a certain drug, or that perhaps they are developing a drug addiction, you can talk to them and figure out what is really going on. Many times, a drug addiction can be prevented by talking with someone and figuring out what they are doing with themselves and with their lives. Talking is often the hardest part of drug addiction prevention, but it is often the most successful. You have no idea how important it is to talk to someone, and what your words and your relationships with someone might mean to that person. Talking is often the first front and the best defense against drug addiction.

It is also important to question why you are doing things, or why another person is doing things. Oftentimes we don’t stop to think of the reasons behind our actions. If we decide that we are doing an activity for the wrong reasons, it is much easier to quit that activity when we realize we should be doing something else. The same goes for drug addictions. If you can figure out why you are using drugs, you will often be able to stop yourself before you develop a drug addiction. Many drug rehab programs use addiction counseling to determine the causes behind and individual addiction.

An addiction to alcohol includes both a physical and mental or psychological dependency on alcohol. A physical addiction will include a build up of tolerance for alcohol and an actual physical craving or dependence on the substance.

You can learn more about the physical issues and alcoholism in the following article: Physical Issues and Alcoholism

A mental of psychological dependence includes using alcohol to “make it through the day, in social situations, or to avoid life or physical cravings for alcohol.

In the Effects of Alcoholism article you can learn more about the effects alcoholism has.

Alcoholism addiction treatment is an application of planned procedures to identify and change patterns of behavior that are maladaptive, destructive or injurious to a person’s health. The intent is to restore appropriate levels of physical, psychological or social functioning. Alcoholism addiction treatment can include behavior modification, medications or their combination.

How to Support Alcohol Recovery

The basic goals for treatment in an alcoholism addiction treatment program are as follows:

Maximizing the addict’s motivation for abstinence.

Rebuilding an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Maximizing the physical and mental health of the alcoholic.

There are 12 principles for effective addiction treatment that one must consider when choosing an alcohol addiction treatment center.

No single treatment for alcoholism is appropriate for all individuals.

Treatment for alcoholism needs to be readily available.

Effective alcoholism treatment attends to the multiple needs of the alcoholic.

Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical for alcoholism treatment effectiveness.

Individual, group and family counseling and other behavioral therapies are critical components of effective treatment for alcoholism.

Medications can be an important element of treatment for some substances.

Addicted or alcohol abusing individuals with coexisting mental disorders should have both disorders treated in an integrated fashion.

Detoxification is only the first stage of alcohol addiction treatment.

Treatment does not have be voluntary in order to be effective.

Possible alcohol or drug use during treatment should be monitored continuously.

Treatment programs should provide assessment for sexually transmitted diseases.

Recovering from an addiction to alcohol is a lifelong process.

There are a variety of treatment options available for alcoholism. Treatment should be tailored to the specific needs of the alcoholic and will vary by setting, duration and intensity. There are two general types of treatment available for alcoholism which include residential/inpatient and outpatient programs.

Residential or inpatient programs refer to a variety of treatments that take place in a residential or clinical/hospital setting. Due to the intensive nature of these types of programs, inpatient or residential treatment may be most helpful to patients who do not respond well to lesser measures.

Outpatient programs use approaches that permit the rehabilitation of the alcoholic in their real-life settings. Outpatient treatment typically costs less than inpatient treatment and is considered to be more suitable for those individuals who are employed and have extensive social or familial support. These low-intensity programs may offer little more than education on alcoholism; other models, such as intensive day treatment programs, can be very comparable to a residential treatment setting. In most outpatient programs, group counseling is emphasized.

Therapeutic Communities are a special type of inpatient program, which are highly structured and require residents to stay 6-12 months. Patients who are typically enrolled in this type of program are individuals who have a relatively long history of alcohol abuse and seriously impaired social functioning. Therapeutic Communities view alcohol and drug abuse as deviant behavior and their principal aim is a global change in lifestyle for the alcoholic.

Within both the inpatient and outpatient programs, several methods of treatment exist including:

Network therapy

Detoxification

Group therapy

Relapse prevention

Education

Life skills

Workforce development

Overall, the best treatment programs for alcoholics are comprehensive and multidimensional. Effective programs need to offer a wide variety of treatment options and support services. If all of the above factors are considered, alcohol rehabilitation can be very successful.

Alcoholism effects everything and everybody in contact with the addict.

Alcoholism is a social disease the effects everyone in society. Alcoholics become dangerous on the road and unreliable at work. Many alcoholics start off as a social drinker.

Many people abuse alcohol socially but are not alcoholics or addicted to alcohol. Read more in our When do social drinkers become alcoholics?

Alcohol Trends

What family members need to know about alcohol addiction

The first thing family members need to realize about alcohol addiction is that it’s not your fault. No family member is responsible for a loved one’s descent into alcohol addiction any more than they could be responsible for his recovery. The choice to drink alcohol to excess and the choice to enter alcohol addiction treatment are both conscious decisions the alcoholic must make.

The second thing family members must remember is that, more often than not, the alcohol addiction problem stems from some greater, deeper personal problem. This could be a poor self-image and lack of self-respect, feelings of inadequacy or simply depression. All these contributing causes of alcohol addiction are also symptoms proliferated by the alcohol addiction. The cycle of addiction is vicious, causing so much pain that the alcohol addiction escalates as an anecdote for that pain.

The third thing family members need to know is they will use you. It is not uncommon for family to continue helping their loved one with housing, finances and other basic life concerns. This natural reaction is enabling the alcoholic to continue in their behavior. It is also a sort of denial by the family that anything is wrong. Keeping up appearances will not erase the alcohol addiction. What is needed is strong, confident and non-judgmental encouragement – and possibly even ultimatums – to enter an alcohol addiction treatment center.

The fourth thing family members should realize is that, once their loved one is in an alcohol addiction treatment center, their loving support cannot be underrated. It took a lot of courage for the alcoholic to take this step and admit they even had a problem. Not all families are that fortunate. Support your loved one, encourage them and express your faith in their abilities to overcome their alcohol addiction.

There are many different types of alcoholism treatment. The appropriate alcoholism treatment method depends largely upon the severity of the patient’s addiction and how receptive they are to the idea of receiving alcoholism treatment. Some alcoholics choose to go “cold turkey”, quitting all alcohol use suddenly. Though successful at times, the “cold turkey” method can have severe consequences during the withdrawal phase. Headaches, body aches, fever and chills are some of the withdrawal symptoms that may be experienced. An alcohol treatment facility typically offers medicinal or all-natural therapeutic help in lessening the severity of withdrawal symptoms. This detox phase is considered a pre-treatment routine. It helps the body and mind get clean and prepared for the process of alcoholism treatment. Detox is particularly helpful for people whose addiction progressed to the point where they are incapable on their own of stopping drinking for a long enough time to allow their system to get clean. A person staying at an alcoholism treatment facility could experience all-natural, holistic healing methods or more medical methods of alcoholism treatment. The surroundings could be very relaxed and homey or very clinical. The length of stay at an alcoholism treatment facility could be a few hours during several days of the week, or several weeks out of the year. Again, this depends largely on how far the addiction has progressed. Self-help groups are one aspect of the treatment process that lasts throughout continuing care. Participants may remain anonymous in these meetings, which are a venue for expression of frustration, challenges, encouragement, hope and successes in the alcoholism treatment journey.

So you have determined you do have a substance abuse problem and you need alcohol rehabilitation. Perhaps you are extremely uncomfortable with the idea of support groups or clinical psychologists and counseling sessions.

There are many different approaches to the alcohol rehabilitation process. You can try weaning yourself off alcohol or quitting suddenly and completely. Some people are able to handle this do-it-yourself approach to alcohol rehabilitation, but generally those whose addictions have not progressed to full-blown alcoholism.

There are also several medications available to assist in the alcohol rehabilitation process:

Disufiram, or Antabuse – Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1949, this drug triggers highly adverse bodily reactions to alcohol. After drinking, a person taking this drug will experience sweating, severe nausea, upset stomach and chest pain.

Naltrexone, ReVia, Vivitrol and Depade – Reduces cravings for alcohol and feelings of satisfaction gained from alcohol.

Acamprosate, or Campral – Appears to control brain functioning that has been disrupted by alcohol consumption and help thinking patterns return to normal.

You can see a religious leader, consult a physician or educate yourself on the Internet. Ultimately, networking is a good idea for the mere sake of getting support in your alcohol rehabilitation journey and learning new sobriety strategies that have worked for others. If you are unable to slow or stop your drinking habits and, for instance, still find yourself coping with stress by turning to the bottle, you should probably seek special care.

If the cost and duration of inpatient drug rehabilitation centers are prohibitive, outpatient alcohol rehabilitation programs are also available. Ultimately, remember the first step in the alcohol rehabilitation process is swallowing your pride and asking for help before it is too late.

Alcohol Drug Rehab

Alcohol Drug Rehab is a drug rehab and alcohol rehabilitation treatment program or facility that provides a treatment program designed to help alcoholics and those suffering from alcoholism recover. There are many different types of alcohol and drug rehab programs available. The type of program that you require is dependent upon your individual situation, there are many alcohol referral programs available to assist you in selecting the best program to meet your needs.

Alcohol Rehabilitation Benefits

The benefits of an alcohol rehabilitation program are numerous. Rehabilitation programs provide an addict a safe and controlled environment in which to recover. The individual is assisted through the detoxification process and through withdrawal symptoms. Training and counseling is provided in order to keep individuals drug and alcohol free – for the long term. Individuals who complete a alcohol rehabilitation program have a much higher success rate in beating their addiction and staying drug and alcohol free.

When is Alcohol Rehabilitation Necessary?

An addict suffering from alcohol addiction or alcoholism is trapped in an alcohol addiction cycle that is a downward spiral. The addict may loose everything before they will admit to a problem or seek treatment. When an addict continues to use and abuse alcohol despite any negative consequences then an alcohol rehabilitation program may be necessary.

The Steps of Alcohol Rehabilitation

Some people quit “cold turkey.” We’ve all heard it “I just quit cold turkey and never looked back.” This idealistic scenario is in the exception rather than the rule, and usually applies to alcohol abusers, not full-blown alcoholics.
Alcoholism takes some time to develop. It is not an overnight thing. Nobody wakes up on any given day and decides this is the day to become an alcoholic. Similarly, alcohol rehabilitation is a process. As a matter of fact, it lasts a lifetime.
The resources an alcohol treatment center has to offer the patient and family during the alcohol rehabilitation process are immeasurably valuable.

They include:

Detox – a painful and even dangerous process. It can be very helpful to have experts on hand to prescribe medication to help ease the transition from an alcohol-dependent life to one that is alcohol-free.

Family or group therapy – Work through family issues, very often the cause or consequence of alcoholism.

Individual counseling – Seek help with mental and emotional traumas from the past that may have been a cause or consequence of alcoholism.

A safe, non-judgmental environment – It is so important to be removed from all temptation, especially in the early days of alcohol rehabilitation. An alcohol treatment center provides this, along with a friendly, supportive staff.

New friends – A new social set may be the best change you could possibly make. Life changes are significant in alcohol rehabilitation to remove yourself from circles that previously knew you by your old, alcohol-addicted personality – especially if those friends’ habits pose a risk of relapse.

Direction – The staff and counselors in an alcohol treatment center are trained to help you identify life goals and think forward to map out a goal achievement plan. They can also refer the patient and all interested family members or friends to good support groups that will help deal with respective issues.
