Barbiturates

By admin | September 17, 2007

Barbiturates are prescription sedatives.

Barbiturates-drug-rehabBarbiturates can be swallowed in a pill form or injected. The pill form can be found in a variety of colors. Typically a barbiturates are used to reduce anxiety or to counteract an “upper” stimulant drug use.

These drugs are commonly referred to as sleeping pills. They effect the brain by slowing down the central nervous system. The effect they have on behavior depends on the amount of the dosage. In low doses they can slow down the heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. In high doses, barbiturates actually act like stimulants.

The largest problem with barbiturates is building up a tolerance and a dependence, that can lead to the development of a drug addiction. Overdoses can occur when an effective dose is close to a lethal dose, coma’s and death can occur when overdose happens. Withdrawal symptoms of barbiturates include anxiety, insomnia, seizures, hallucinations, and nausea.

Types of barbiturates include Pentobarbital, Secobarbital, Amobarbital, and Phenobarbital.

Drug rehab programs for barbiturates include a removal of the barbiturates from the body. Barbiturates dissolve into body fat, where they can accumulate and then enter the blood stream. A detox program can assist an addict on the removal of the drug from the body and control of the withdrawal symptoms. Further assistance in learning to deal with anxiety and stress can help an individual learn to deal with daily stress with out the aid of barbiturates or any other substance.

For more information on the treatment and recovery of barbiturates contact The Rehab Advisor and speak with a qualified drug rehab  counselor.
